Williams Door Company – 5612 Kingston Pike Knoxville, TN – January 1977
In the fall of 1971, Mike and his wife Lois started Williams Remodeling & Door Company with a $100 investment into this venture not knowing what hard work was ahead of their family. Mike stayed very busy with remodeling construction-type work and garage door installs as work arose. As the years passed, the garage door service work and new door installations continued to increase, Mike stopped doing the remodeling work and focus on garage door service work and garage door installations. By 1976 Williams Door Company had picked up several builder accounts, installing garage doors on the new houses being built in Knoxville and surrounding towns. Mike leased his 1st office / warehouse in the spring of 1977 from Dewey Wylie the co-owner of Crawford Garage Door Sales of Knoxville. At this time Mike also had purchased the remaining inventory of Crawford Door parts from Mr. Wylie, Crawford Garage Door Sales of Knoxville had ended all operations in the Knoxville, TN area. At this time Williams Door Company sold and installed Wayne-Dalton garage doors.
Mike and Lois had two sons Scott and Randall who both worked summers in the family business in the late 70s and early 80s. Scott came to work in the business full-time in the fall of 1984. Randall also joined the business in 1986. Both Scott and Randall spent the next several years learning the garage door business and starting their own families. Williams Door Company started selling Clopay Garage Doors in 1982 from the same 5612 Kingston Pike address in Knoxville, TN. With a trusted following on builders, homeowners and commercial business owners WDC began to grow and desperately needed a larger warehouse.
